My Vitiligo

Hi... I am Wissam, man, married with 3 kids, Just recently I noticed few white patches on my face and neck, at the beginning I thought it is only Fungus or some skin infections. But after visiting my doctor... he said...You have vitiligo.. Vitiligo??, what was that?.. My doctor said... you know the famous singer Mickel Jakcson, You have similar skin disorder, but you still in the beginning... Now after 6 months... I have started treatment.. during that time, I went through many internet material for study, and the most that make me happy, the fact that.... I am not alone.... Welcome to my Blog..

  1. I have started Protopic Ointment 0.1%, twice a day, after 1 month, now, I have good results on my hand, but not my face & neck..
based on the literature, You need at least 3 months to see results but I can see results now on my hand.., my white patch on my upper hand start to repigment slowly.. However I started to take the war to the next level, I have ordered my UVB narrowband.. lets wait and see.. I will keep you updated..

  2. You need to use the lamp one time every day day in every area. The exposure should start from 1/2 minute. Every day you need to increase the exposure time by 1/2 minute until you reach the time that makes your skin a bit pink, and stay at that time. The correct time is 1-5 minutes, depending on on your skin.

In Vitiligo After few weeks you will see small brown dots. Few weeks later they will increase their diameter until they will fill the whole spot. The cure is faster on the face and neck than on other areas.

  3. I have two small vitiligo spots on the testicules, due to a medication that was too strong on my skin, and it kind of burnt me. I've been putting Dovonex for 6 months now, with the only result that the spots were only more red. Now, I'm starting to have brown spots. I have them more and more, and they are browner than the rest of the testicules. I don't know if this is the healing part or if I'm gonna be stuck with white spots AND frikles...

    1. I am now noticing spots on my testicles as well. I think another patch is forming. You posted this a while back, did you have any luck with this? Did the vitiligo spot move to other parts.

  4. Are you sure, It is Vitiligo? if it is.. then I highly recommend you to use a combination of Protopic Ointment & UVB narrow band, If is converted into Brown colour , It is a healing process, that convert the skin to darker, due sudden activity of the pigmentation cell, It will be stabilize and return back to normal, any way you need to consult specialist, as Vitiligo always mistakenly diagnosed. 6. Today is very important for me.. my white patch on face start to re-pigment again..I think it is the PROTOPIC who saves the day.. I am still warming up in my uvb narrow band treatment, I reached 1 minute & 20 sec.. I am targeting 3 minutes.. The treatment time (exposure time) should be increased slightly 20 sec each subsequent treatment. I advise all vitiligo patient to use this magic.. called Protopic.

  7. i am using protopic but I want a nbuvb wand. I am in the states and I need a prescription. It sucks....

hope your still seeing good results....

  8. Yes, the results are fantastic, the patch near my lips almost gone, I am using the nbUVB light, it is very important to use it in the treatment, PROTOPIC will stop the self immune but you need UVB to produce the color back.
You could buy handy light made in germany from me i have extra new one, I will send to your door step without prescription (I will pack it like gift). This is not to make profit only as help, The price is USD550 with delivery.

  9. Hello. Just want to ask a question regarding the application of Protopic. After I put it on, there's a shiny film that remains on top of the skin, no matter how hard i rub it in. Is this how it's supposed to be? After I apply it, the vitiliginous areas are shiny and it makes me look weird. For how long should the ointment rest on the skin before wash it off? Also, it rubs off on everything? Am I supposed to not use my hands while the ointment is on them? Thanks for your help!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I did not noticed any shiny film in my case, yes, the application should be two times a day, and just leave it there for few hours, and after that you can wash it with water, I have recovered 99% from vitiligo, I think the most important factor in my case is the UVB lamp narrow band, it is the most effective treatment method at the moment, if it is combined with the protopics, it will cure any vitiligo., Please keep us updated on your case

  12. I started using protopic ointment about 2 weeks ago and have started to see small brown patches on 3/8 spots.

Should i get the UVB lamp or try my luck wid the ointment?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes, this is the exact rite time to use UVB, I am sure you will be recovered totally, Please follow the exact procedure and dont burn your skin. 1st start with 20 sec, then increase by 20 sec till you reach 2 min & 20 sec (based on my skin), You should treat your skin by the light 3-4 times a week, Please make sure to remove protopic totally from your skin, let your skin rest for 2 hours and then start your treatment, make sure your skin is dry and not moist during treatment.
    Good luck to you friend.

  14. Hi, I also have vitiligo and am looking to purchase a UVB lamp. Do I need it to be 100% UVB light? What brand is a good buy? Thanks for this blog.

  16. Thank for your post, You can Google this brand:

    http://www.psoriasiscafe.org/dermalight.htm

If you are in USA or UK, then buy from Amazon

and yes it has to be 100% UVB narrow band, otherwise it will burn your skin.
Please make sure that you start the treatment time 20 sec, then increase the period by 20 sec in the second treatment, till you reach 4 min then please notice your skin after treatment, if it start to change to pink colour , then fix the UVB treatment time at that level which only change the skin after treatment to pink colour.

This is the time that suitable for your skin. The frequency of treatment if 3-4 times per week.
I highly advise to use PROTOPIC ointment together, please refer to my blog for details.

  17. hii i am 16 year old male and i wass diagnosed with vitiligo when i was in 8th gradee ive had it all my lifee but i just thought it was birth marks but the dermatolagist said it was vitiligo and i never really paid attention to it but it is now spreading over the years i have it on my fingers, legs, genitals waist, my feet and my arm pits. i am very self contious about it and i have been a little depressed about it and i am in desperate need of a cure i have tried elidel oitment(dnt think i spelled that right but) and i am frequently using fluocinodine and ive been using it for about2 weeks and i am wondering

    does protopic really work?
    and does it cause cancer?

aand is the uv wand necessary because ive heard that may cause cancer also... plzz get back to me i am in desperate need to find a curee or at leaast bring back my pigmentation

ps does it matter if it is in a big patch or does protopic bring back the pigmentation too?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks , for your comment, Please never get so depressed, psychological effect will play big role in spreading Vitiligo, make it more aggressive in spreading.
I am not Doctor or specialist in this field, I am here just to tell my successful story.

I have done many literature review on using PROTOPIC and UVB Light Narrow band, Please do not worry at all, because the good think is Vitiligo patient will never even get any Skin cancer, Vitiligo and Skin Cancer will never sit on one skin, This is what I would like to make it clear here, I have asked many specialist in this field.

Regarding UVB narrow band, I repeat not U\VB alone, but UVB narrow band, is the only safe and fast cure to Vitiligo. And the more efficient way is to start the treatment by taking 3 month course of PROTOPIC OINTMENT, just apply two times a day morning and before sleeping, after one month, of PROTOPIC alone, start combined PROTOPIC with UVB narrow band , and please refer to my blog for frequency and exposure time, This is what I can guarantee that it will work for every Vitiligo patient, because it worked for me and many.. many others I advised.
It dosenot matter if the Vitiligo patch big , medium or small, it will give effect, but for complete cure for large area, it might take time, but do you, when you feel that some progress happens, you feel psychologically much better, and this how you can win the war, never give up.
I always advise you during the treatment to take daily any multi vitamins , multi minerals supplement , B complex and Cupper work very good with PROTOPIC and UVB narrow band.
Please write to us your progress.
    Get well soon friend.

  21. hi, first and foremost, i just wanted thank you for such an informative blog. I have learned so much from reading it. I just have a few quick question for you. i just started my home treatment with my Dermalight80 and was wondering... after each treatment, how long did it take your skin to turn pink? Does it turn right away moments after or did it take some time within the 24 hours after the treatment to change color? I am currently at about 2 minutes (sixth session) and my skin is starting to react to the uvb light, but it is a light pink, should i keep increasing 20 seconds with each session until my pink gets darker? My last question is am i suppose to apply anything after i am done with each session? Like moisturizing lotion or anything because i havn't been applying anything since my skin doesn't seem to be drying out.

  23. Dear Friend, Thanks for your post,

You have made the rite choice by starting UVB narrow band, Dermalight80 is a good UVB narrow band source, which use Philips widely used UVB narrow band light, let me answer you:

1-After few hours up to 12 hours from the treatment, the pink colour will appear, not immediately.

2-Once the light pink colour appeared on your skin within 12 hours from the treatment, Stop on that time, this is the exact time you need for curing., if you increase the time, your skin might have burned and this will give adverse effect, even the Vitiligo area will extend, as the burning is the worst thing in Vitiligo people like us.

3-Do not put any Ointment on the skin during or after the treatment, just leave it dry, this is very important; you still can take bath or wash the area but dry it after that.

4-I always recommend PROTOPIC treatment at least 2 month before stating the UVB narrow band treatment, but if you have started the UVB course, then continue.

5-UVB treatment is 3 -4 times per week, do not use more frequency.

6-During the treatment make sure your skin is very dry, if your skin is wet, the film water or oil layer on the skin might affect the intensity, frequency of the UVB narrow band and thus reverse effect will happen. Do not get scared from this but make your skis as dry as possible.

    Get well soon

  24. Hi again,

Thank you for the quick response. You've been great help. Just had a couple more really quick questions for you (thank you in advance by the way).

I've been applying the UVB to my vitiligo spots every other day for the past 2 weeks, so Mon, Weds, Fri, Sun, Tues and so on; which is 3-4 times per week as you have indicated. My question is if i apply the UVB light on a Monday and by Tuesday it turns pink. Even though Wednesday would be my next scheduled day to use the UVB light again, am i supposed to use it again if my skin is still pink from Monday's session? Or do i wait another day or two until my skin turns back to white before i proceed with using the light again? The reason i ask is because i want to make sure that i am applying the right amount of UVB light dosage without going overboard and burning my skin.

My last question is how do i know if i have burned my skin? i know there is a fine line between my skin reacting by turning pink and actually burning. I am assuming that i have burned my skin with the Dermalight80 if it feels like a sunburn, which the skin hurts and feels itchy?

Again, thank you so much for answering my questions.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am sorry for late reply, Yes please wait till the pinky skin returned to normal color and then apply uvB light again, and yes you are rite the burning will feel itchy skin, so please avoid that.

  26. Wissam, thanks for the blog. Its very informative and useful. I have just ordered the DermFix 900 off the Androv website.

I have white patches on the back of my hands and also on my arms. I had resolved to live with the condition but after some nice sunny days this summer the patches became really visibile and I noticed a lot of people looking at them. I even started getting some "Michael Jackson" comments which made me even more sub conscious. I also have patches on my legs and genitals but I'm not too bothered about those.

I'm really hoping for good results as the treatment from all I have read seems to be quite successful for a lot of people. I will post back when I get the lamp and start treatment.

  27. Everyone, please read about protopic and use of UVB - it will increase the risk of skin cancer and should not be used together.

  28. Wissam,

  30. The only way is to buy them, protopic is available in local pharamacies and UVb comp can be purchased online from many websites and they send to your home address. You can try to search in ebay as there are some cheapest prices.

  32. Ive just started using protopic about 10 days ago and have a uvb light in the mail. I'll wait until about a month in to use but i have already noticed two small brown marks appear and its more than exciting to see this product working. I had to see a dermatoligist in a big city to get this prescription but glad i made the trip!

Great site, people need to use protopic. I hope the uvb light helps speed up the process. I have 4 spots on each foot, and genitals. and two finger tips.

  35. Hi Wissam, I am wondering how you have progressed using Protopic AND the UVB light. My son has vitiligo on his neck and has been using protopic for about 3 months now with a little pigment improvement. we are looking into combining treatment with a uvb light to see if results are better.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am having thick hair in this area so, I think this could be helpful, Could you tell me , when the vitiligo starts? how big the spot?

    ReplyDelete
  37. My son is 12 years old. He has about 3 small patches of vitiligo. Similar to the size of a quarter (coin). They came into existence about 1-2 years ago. They were very small and seemed to more noticeable. We went to a dermatolgist and he confirmed it to be vitiligo and gave him protopic .1% 100g, which after researching I was skeptical of applying due to his age. (Although he is above average height/weight). Finally, we decided to try the protopic and have been applying for about 3 months and there seems to be some improvement, but it is hard to tell because it is now winter here and the skin around the patches was very tan before due to summertime. So, I'm not sure if it just looks like the white patches are blending in more now that his skin is lighter because of winter. I just purchased a dermalight 80 uvb handheld light that we were going to try, but also have some hesitation due to all the warnings which say NOT to use Protopic with any kind of light therapy. My son does not seem to have vitiligo anywhere else except maybe a start of a small patch on his cheek ... but it doesn't seem to be spreading out of control. I am wondering how I should start the uvb light treatment and if i should take a break from the protopic? any advice/suggestions would be helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Wissam,
I just got my uvb light for my son. i have read that i should start treatment in 30second intervals on alternating days. should he still continue applying Protopic? would we apply protopic every day or on the alternating days? protopic, uvb treatment, protopic, uvb treatment and so on?

I am anxious to see if the uvb treatment will improve the vitiligo patches on his neck. i am also concerned about using both treatments together and possible skin cancer risk.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You can stop the Protopic treatment and start only the UVB therapy, start with 30 sec, then increase 10 sec every treatment until you reach the duration in which you notice a little pinky skin after the treatment, then you should stop at this level, for example my level was 2 min and 10 seconds (I am white man from middle east), each skin will have its time but usually it will be around 2 min.

Ok and here is my special recommendation to you.. During the treatment, start multi vitamins and multi minerals course (get a good daily tablet formula) you can find many brands in the market, and make sure the formula contains folic acid, B12 and Cu, I am sure you will start get pigmentation very soon. Please let us know the results, and have all my best wishes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Wissam,
I have read your blog extensively and wonder how close the narrowband uvb light wand should be to the skin. i will be applying this to my son's neck and want to make sure I am not harming his skin. Also, when should he continue using the Protopic, or should he stop altogether once we start light therapy? thank you for your kind responses.!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Please use the instruction with the comb, normally you can apply it straight touching the skin, the most important is the exposure time. Yes, I would advise to stop the protopic treatment, and take muti vitamins and minerals course with UVB treatment, include B12, Folic acid and cu.

    Thanks

  42. Hi Wissam, I'm new to this blog. I started applying protopic oilment on my 8 yr old daughter about a week ago and just yesterday underwent her 3rd UVB-NB exposure (1 min so far). I just wanted to confirm with you if the following application sequence is okay: take a bath before bedtime, do UVB-NB, apply protopic. Also, do you still encourage using protopic along with NVB-NB? The last few posts make me doubt now. Thanks!

  43. HEY WISSAM, I HAVE HAD VITILIGO ON MY EYELID AND EYEBROW SINCE I WAS EIGHT AND I AM AS WELL USING THIS PROTOPIC AND IT DOES SEEM TO BE WORKING ON MY SKIN BUT I WAS WONDERING IF IT WILL ALSO MAKE MY WHITE EYEBROW HAIR BROWN .. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE ADVICE !

    ReplyDelete
  44. It looks like Wissam is not checking this site anymore. Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that the UVB-NB treatment that I started on my daughter a month ago is working. I'm not sure whether the protopic is doing something, but I think it's mainly the lamp. Her face has repigmented 50% I would say, but I don't see any noticeable difference on her hands, feet, elbows, and knees. I've realized it takes longer exposures on those areas for the skin to turn pink. It seems to me that radiation from handheld UVB-NB units are insufficient for hands, feet, etc. My two cents!

    ReplyDelete
  45. To respond to the agove about your daughter, I have had vitiligo for 13 years now and have aggressively tried many things and read more than you want to know about it. To break it down, it seems that not everything works for everyone, but the narrowband UVB light seems to be the best treatment with the widest success. I think the Protopic can help but I really think the light does it. Of all the topicals out there, it seems that Protopic is the best one for Vitiligo. I hope this helps somone. Yes it looks like Wissam is not checking this blog but I notice he still has Google ads up here that pawn other treatments and he gets paid for those ads. I am sure he donates it all the the vitiligo charity though!

  46. Thank you for posting on my blog, I am always here checking your post and get it approved, I would reply when there is a need for new information, ,most of the questions have been answered somewhere in my blog, very soon I will add more topics to this blog. Yes I strongly feel that UVB narrow band is the best solution for Vitiligo at the moments, even protopic is helping but without UVB, you will not get the regimentation, by the way, please give your skin rest for one or two months every 6 months of UVB treatment. I have my skin regimented completely but after I stopped the UVB for 3 months, I can see some white dots came back, and now I am in action again to remove them by UVB.

Gusy please indicate your names and your country at the end of your post.

    All the best for you..

  47. Hi, thanks a lot for the informative blog...i've got vitiligo on my face around the edges of my mouth and eyes and have just started using Protopic. I was just wondering though, i'm thinking of buying a nb uvb lamp, but i'm wondering how you use it to treat small patches as it seems quite large, and i dont really want it to tan the normal parts of my face as the contrast will be worse?? Are there attachments that come with it for smaller areas? thanks

    ReplyDelete
  48. It is possible, You can use a piece of clothes to cover all your face and make a hole with diameter slightly larger than the vitiligo area, and cover your face during the treatment, don’t worry about contrast, subjecting your skin to 2 minutes every 2 days to UVB will never make your skin get tanned.

Please let me know how long since the vitiligo started to appear on your skin?

    ReplyDelete
  49. It appeared about 6 months ago but has spread quite fast. I'm not sure if the protopic is making any difference because i've heard its supposed to burn or itch a bit for the first few days but i've had none of that. I have an appointment with a dermatologist but thats not till july!, so i bought some protopic on ebay. its protopic, not a generic make, and its 0.1%

  57. Thank you very much, It is really interesting information.

  58. I am a sixteen year old girl and I've had vitilgo for about 6 years now. I just found out it was vitiligo..I was misdiagnosed and told it was tinea versicolor. I was perscribed Protopic and have been using it for about 1 week. There is already some color coming back into some of the spots on my neck. I have vitiligo on my eyelid, under my arms, back, and stomach. I am just concentrating on my under arms, eyelid, and neck now. If protopic helps these areas I will try it on the other areas. So far when I put protopic on it itches, but not all the time. Is this normal? My dermatologist has recommended me to use protopic for 2 months and if I don't get the results I want I can use a light box, which I am assuming is the same as the UVB light mentioned several times above? I'm happy to hear so many success stories with the use of protopic ointment and am excited to see my spots disappear. I used to be very self concious about my condition but I have very good friends who helped me realize it's nothing to get depressed about. This site has been very helpful and my mom and I are looking in to buying a UVB light. Thanks so much! I will let you know about how my treatment is going!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thank you for the post, I highly recommend you to use UVB light as soon as possible, and use it with B12, folic acid and cupper supplement. I am pretty sure you will get faster and immediate re-pigmentation. Please remember that after re-pigmentation do not stop the treatment, you need to continue but with less frequency.
Please keep us informed about your treatment progress.
    My Best wishes

  60. Wissam, I posted my comment early but i guess you deleted. I was saying I hope you not working for UVB because your blog gave me hope.

  61. Hi Wissam,
Thank you for your informative blog. I had vitiligo on my facial area, eye lid and eye brown like to know what your suggestion and recommandtion are. too much informaton on the interent tht make me confused. my doctor told me i had segmental vitiligo.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Please start using UVB narrow band, with vitamins like B12, folic acid , please refer to other posting in this blog for dosage and duration, keep us updated.

  63. Hello Wissam,
I used protopic on my face to cure vitiligo i see dark spot on the vitiligo area for a while and then it goes away back to white spot agin. you know why this happeing? I just oredered uvb is on the way how you treat the eyes lid area?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yes this is due to lack of UVB light, you need UVB to gain back your skin pigmentation. Regarding the eye lid, I don't have personal experience, hopefully one of the blog reader can help you, but when it comes to UVB , please protect your eyes during the treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Wisssam,
Thank you for the site. I got my UVB today. just want to get it right I will start with 20 second and increase another 20 second the following day or do i have to skip a day before start treat with uvb again.

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wissam,
I like to ask you question about Protopic for now i put it on my face and leave it on for all day until bed time then i take shower washed my face and put it on again. my question is do i leve it on my face all day or just for couple of hours then wash it off?

    ReplyDelete
  67. How do you do the combined protopic and nb-uvb treatment? i read in some sites that protopic should not be used with uvb treatment. i have had vitiligo for 5 months now, and luckily it is just confined in a small area on my back. This is the first time that i will be treating it, and i am confused as to how i should go about it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yes, You have to skip one day, the treatment frequency is 3 times a week.

    ReplyDelete
  69. For protopic treatment, yes you can put it on your skin as long as possible, twice a day, however, always allow 2-3 hours rest for your skin every day.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Combines Protopic and UVB as not recommended at all, howevere if you want to do both treatment in the same day, please make sure you washout the oil and dry your skin before each UVB treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  71. may i ask how long since your vitiligo started that you began treatment? Where you first got it and also how fast did it spread?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wissam, so you said we should not combine the use of protopic and usb? man i just refilled my protopic for 85$.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Wissam, I friend refered me to a chinese Doctor i talked on the phone with her one time. she seems to be very knowledgeable about vitiligo she advised me to stop seeing western Doctor period. I have not gone to see her yet below is the email she sent to my friend.

    passing Dr. Duan's suggestions:

"I would like you to pass a piece of humble advice to him when you have the chance. Hormone treatment does more damages to him rather than vitiligo itself. Vitiligo is only a cosmetic issue, not life threatening. However, hormone will do very little to improve vitiligo, and more of a disruption to his health, causing various damanges such as:
-- skin: acne, thinner skin layer
-- uneven distribution of body fat (swollen face)
-- depressed immune system (prone to infections)
    -- adrenopause (depressed adrenal cortex)
-- osteoporosis (fagile bones) or even osteonecrosis (death of the bone)
    ...

And the longer he's under hormone treatment, the tougher for Chinese medicine to off-set those damages. Not trying to scare anybody but simply telling the truth."

    you have nice day,

    ReplyDelete
  74. yes I agree with all that, Hormone treatment should not be at all the answer or the treatment to Vitiligo.

    Thanks for posting

    ReplyDelete
  75. You still can use your Protopic 1st for 3 months and then you stop this treatment and start 6 months UVB treatment. Just try avoid both in the same time.

Guys please indicate your nickname at the end of your post so we can communicate with each other better.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hi Wissam,

I believe that you are on your maintenance phase of vitiligo. I just wanna know how easy is it to repigment new spots that come back? I am new to this disease, and I am scared to death not knowing how fast or what kind of vitiligo i got. I don't know if I can handle it spreading to more visible areas.

    thanks,
    janee

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yes, I am.

I have the spot near my lips, it is coming back every 2 month, and I have to treat it with UVB and I found something very interesting, using vitamin and minerals supplement (daily tablet), will help to suppress the potential of Re-Vitiligo or ( what I like to call it ,Returned Vitiligo), Thus, I found that fighting with Vitiligo should be continuous effort, and if you are lazy to conduct your UVB for few weeks, then that white spots will definitely come back and win the war.

Yes I was lazy sometimes, and that spot near my lips have came back to life and I am fighting again and again, but it is all under control, means there is no development in my Vitiligo to new areas. Even I have new one on the back of my neck !!

I also would like to mention here, that the Vitiligo is very much connected to your life style, psychological status, so as example if you are student, you will find that Vitiligo will get very strong and active during examination period, when your brain and body are very much in stress. Or if you are working then be careful during work stress period.

Yes guys we have to keep fighting Vitiligo forever, there is NO permanent cure.

I wish you all the best.

    keep all the good post

  78. Wissam, I just started using uvb start with 20 second then increased another 20 second I have reached my 2 minutes and it turned pink and it stay pink for the last three days. should i wait for my skin to turn back normal before the next treatment or i should go ahead and treated every other three days even thou it is still pink.

    Jimmy

    ReplyDelete
  79. thanks for replying!

so would you say that vitiligo, when treated early, is manageable?

    janee

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes, Please wait till your skin return back to its original color, and thus your treatment will be less frequent. Please make sure not to burn your skin, dark pink is not advisable, light to medium pink will be perfect..
    keep us updated.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yes it is manageable if you start treatment in the early stages, and you keep the treatment up. Do not ever stop taking daily supplements, especially B12, Folic acid, zink and copper.

  86. hi this is janee again... thanks for replying promptly. it is somehow giving me a comfort to think that something can be done. although, i know that i have to be able to accept this if it comes to worse.

anyway, i have a question regarding the UVB timing. Do you use the same treatment time for all of the spots that you treat? Or do you have to determine the treatment time for each spot?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thanks again for asking another important question, Yes the treatment time for each spot is slightly different depends on the location. In my case I have few small spots on my neck and they are all responding to the same treatment time of (2 min 5 sec). However, I have one spot in my arm and this require little more time like extra (10-20 sec). You really need to calibrate the time required for each spot for maximum results.
The average time required for each skin type is different. Let us know your required treatment time?
    Thank you for sharing

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wissam, after using uvb for 2 minutes my vitiligo white spot become hard. what this mean?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Mike, at what time your skin became pink color, this is the time that you should use.
if your skin develop different response, then perhaps this treatment is not good for you. It is a rare case.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Wang, How long was your protopic treatment?, You need to stop and wait for your skin to return back to its color.

    keep us updated.

    ReplyDelete
  94. wissam my vit became pink color at two minutes. it stay pink for the last five days and now it became kinda hard.

    Mike

    ReplyDelete
  95. Mike, it is Ok, just reduce the treatment time to 1 min 50 sec, (minus 10 sec).

    ReplyDelete
  96. I been using protopic for the last four months twice day. funny i never have pimple all my life after using protopic for a while pimple popped up in the vitiliog area and it now gone and it leave me with black skin instead of white spot.

  102. Hi,
My 7 year old daughter has had vitiligo for the last 12 months and on homeopathy treatment. Her vitiligo spots have been steady with a big patch under her chin. Not sure if the homeopathy is working. But I was concerned when she recently developed spots on her eyelids. I started narrow uvb light treatment yesterday. I used it on all her spots for the same amount of time, about 8 seconds each. Her chin has turned bright pink and the rest of the spots remain the same. What does all this mean? I am not using any protopic on her since its use is controversial. Please advise. And thank you for this website.

    ReplyDelete
  103. 8 seconds are very short time for this treatment, some spots might require more treatment time try to increase the treatment time slowly to get the pink color for each spot separately.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wissam, please tell me how your treatment goes?

    ReplyDelete
  105. I have recovered almost 95%. thanks to UVB and Centrum® .

    ReplyDelete
  110. Yes, this is normal and it happened with me and with others, there is no permanent cure from Vitiligo, you need to keep using the UVB from time to time, for regimentation. Vitiligo cause is unknown yet even though, there are many good theories.

Please let us know more about your case in details.

  113. Hi Wissam i use a self tanner (fake tan)once or twice a week to help hide my vitiligo on my face.Is it ok to use Elidel which my derm prescribed, on the skin that has fake tan? Will my skin absorb the elidel?

I would appreciate your response or anyone else who uses self tanners and vitiligo.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I am affraid, the skin should be clean, dry for effective treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hi wissam thanks for the response, i would wash my skin and dry it but as you know self tanners stay on the skin for several days, so if its clean with respect to a facial wash and dry(though self tanner still on the skin as explained) would that be ok?

Also if i was to use UVB NB would that be ok to use with a self tanner on it?

Thanks again, your answers i sooo appreciated!

  122. I think you can stick to UVB alone at this time, Please give your skin a rest every 4 months of UVB treatment, like 2 weeks and then start again.

    Hope this will help

  123. Wissam, has your vitiligo been stable or has it spread at all?

  128. Wissam, when applied protopic do i need to go outside to get some sun?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Hi Wissam, thank you for putting all this valualble information together.

Relative to the application of UVB narrowband lamp, I'd like to know when you speak about for example 4 minutes treatment, is it per vitiligo spot per day, or the cumulative exposure in one day for all the vitiligo spots?
    Appreciate your feedback.

    ReplyDelete
  130. No, the time is not 4 min, it is around 2 min per spot per day, and 3 days or 2 days a week, this uvb exposure time is different from skin to skin, and from spot to spot sometimes for the same skin and you have to start with only 10 sec, then second treatment add 10 sec, so you treat each spot 20 sec, continue adding 10 sec every next treatment till you reach the time that leave your skin in pink color after the treatment, this is the time required for your skin. Please do not expose your skin to more time as this will burn your skin, and can result in the spot getting bigger.

Is this just because they cranked it up a bit or will my skin get use to it after a couple of sessions?

  131. Dear Wissam,

Quick question. Can you use UVB-NB on the genitals and surrounding area? This is the only place where I have vitiligo. I have just started using Protopic and hope to see some results soon. Thinking about getting a UVB-NB lamp but am I right to say that I should not use it until I have used Protopic for at least 3 months?

    Would appreciate your guidance.

  135. Hi Wissam,

A few days ago I found two patches of vitiligo at my rear neck, together with some white head-hair regions found one year ago, which were all confirmed as vitiligo by the doctor.

For me, my past habits are quite qualified with vitiligo causes, under stress, keeping tired in continuous days, addiction of alcohol, etc. Regretful, but it's my real life which would be changed from now on.

Actually, one positive point is I have to give up most of my tiring jobs, avoid challenging stuff and keep optimistic. Now I'm enjoying the easy life.

However, one panic is still bothering me whether vitiligo would appear in my face somewhere some day. To your knowledge, how mush is the possibility?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Hi Wissam,

I have Vitiligo pretty much everywhere on my body, i.e Knees, Hips, Feet, Hands, Arms, Face, Hips, and Genitalia etc... I was prescribed Protopic 0.1 a few years ago and started to used it frequently over a 3 month period. I then stopped as (Being a little impatient) couldn’t see and effects of re-pigmentation in my skin. However I have just come back off of holiday and I have been exposed to the sun, i used P20 Sun Oil as I never burn using this, but didn’t cover my knees. I have seen significant re-pigmentation in my knees, (3/4 of the patch has disappeared). I am so excited I am getting some more Protopic 0.1 ASAP.

Please can you advise me, could the re-pigmentation occur everywhere on my body or am I getting a little too excited.

Also over the years I have frequently been looking online for a cure for Vitiligo, I have come across two products called Vitiligo Tab & Vitiligo Organics. Have you had or heard of any dealings using these two products?

Thank you - Your advice would be appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Dear jack
Thank you for sharing. I think the response is different from part to part and it varies from person to person. I would suggest using UVB narrow band, as I have described in my blog. The results will be fast, however it is not cure. You have to keep using UVB from time to time for regimentation, as I do.

Vitiligo treatment is a fighting forever.
    Thanks

  138. Hi Wissam,

I just discovered your blog, and read all over. I got general Vitiligo, symmetric on my hands, face, feet, genital etc.
I'm pretty much convinced with multivitamin & Protopic 0.1% and UVB narrow bound treatment.

thank you for sharing your experiences.

I will share my results once started with the suggested treatment.

  139. hi wissan,

is a regular kind of UV bulb effective in treating vitiligo? like the ones being use to detect counterfeit money?

been a person with vitiligo for 15 yrs now. and been on the lamp on and off, consulted numerous dermatologists in the past(all of whom said the same things), and been using steroids and protopic. but it just didn't dawn on me to ask my dermatologists if a regular UV lamp is ok to use. though, i could say that protopic worked for me.

    thanks for the help.

  140. Hi All,
I was recently diagnosed with vitiligo. I have on my left cheek, about 6 spots. I am using protopic for 3 weeks now and one of the 6 (one of the smaller ones) is almost gone. The rest are unchanged.
My dermatologist told me that the best therapy is Excimer laser like Xtrac. I will probably try it in a couple of months if protopic does not help much.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Thank you for your posting, Could you inform us with the future results of Xtrac..?

    Many thanks

  142. It might have been asked but I did not find it. I got my Protopic and it says not to use with Phototherapy and light. How are you doing it with UVB are you using the light and then applying the Protopic or are alternating days - one day protopic and one day light or are you using protopic on one area and the light on another or are you waiting a few hours between the light the protopic.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I was diagnosed with vitiligo about 8 months ago. I was given steroids but found that ruined the skin so stopped using it. I have vitiligo on my face around the lips, on my hands, knees, lightly on my elbows and isbeen now coming in on my feet. I have been using the uvb nb light in very light durations and am starting to see some progress on my right hand. I've using 15 seconds per spot every other day with the lamp but haven't seen progress till I got a bit too much sun on my hands. I'm getting the repigmentation starting around the hair follicules and seems to be gradually spreading. I'm guessing my doseage with the uvb nb lamp wasn't the success as it seemed to coordinate with too much sun exposure/ sunburn. Would it be fair to say that increasing the uvb nb exposure would get me the progress im seeing without sun exposure? -continued-

    ReplyDelete
  144. -continued-. I was also perscribed protopics .1% for the specific spots around my lips but stopped using it early on as I didn't know that protopics effectiveness was reliant on longer duration. I will alternate the use of the protopics and uvb nb lamp every other day and will try increasing 20 seconds per session until I get the recommended redness but not burn. Will keep people posted on progress of protopics and uvb nb regime. Please let me know if anything else may help with treatment or if anyone has any suggestions. Good luck to all. Scottyboy3456

I found the price as reasonable if not better than ebay. One for $263.87 and the other $343.07. These were the most reasonable prices that I found for brand new. Good luck to all.

  148. Thank you for all the info Wissam!

There are a lot of postings here of folks saying they just ordered or just started using the UV light.. but it seems they never come back to report on their progress. Has anyone seen positive results with UV light and Protopic other than Wissam? If yes, please give details.. percent improvement? How long before you saw results, etc.

    Thanks, Mya

  150. I just started treatment with nb-uvb in clinic center.
The reason to go to there because clinic center can have adjusted intensity of light (measure with mJ/cm).

Wissam, does Dermalight can adjust the intensity of nv-uvb light.

  152. Hi Wissam

You mention that you take Centrum as part of your regimen...

I have read that Vitamin C inhibits the production of melanin,

would it be advisable to seperately take Vitamin B, Vitamin D, copper, zinc and folic acid? instead of a multivitamin?

I intend to buy a NB UVB Wand soon, as I have been using Protopic 0.1 for a few months now.

Thanks, Kyle. (Vitiligo sufferer for 15 years)

  153. Anonymous 111: I started using protopic few months ago and it is giving some slow positive progress. I'll continuo using it for another month and after that I'll switch to the NB-UVB 311 nm lamp with Recolor vitamins. I'll keep you updated about the progress.

  154. hi wissam, i am 17 and have had vitiligo for as long as i can remember.

i recently started protopic and even though its been less than a month i am starting to see very good results in most areas. i hope that as months go on it will get better and better because im going on lads holiday in july.

i have an appointment in april with my specialist so ill wait to talk to him about UVB before buying one but ill tell him about your blog and progress.

if protopic clears most of it up before april, then how long do you reckon the uvb would take to work because like i said im going on holiday in july and am wondering if the less than 3 month period between the specialist and my holiday will be enough.

  157. Hi Wissam ,
I have been using protopic 0.1% for 4 months and I see no improvement . It seems to be getting worse. Im now interested in the Dermfix 900 . My dermatologist said I shouldnt be doing treatment at home and said it needs to be done in a clinic. The clinic is to far from where I live . Is it safe for me to try at home treatment ? Also, where can I order a Dermfix 900 ?

  158. Hi Wassam,

I am suffering from vitiligo a year ago. I have few patches near my both ears, and few in my chest. I was diagnosed with this disease only a week ago and I am given protopic 0.1%.

I don't know how to use this medicine. So, I have few questions
    1. Can I use sunscreen in the patches after I apply protopic?
    2. If I can, then after how much time I can apply sunscreen after using protopic?
    3. I found in web that, you need sun exposure also. So, can I expose to sun when the protopic is in my body?
    4. Regarding question 3, what my idea is, I will expose to sun early in the morning for 5-10 minutes every other day only before applying protopic. Is it okay?

Please suggest me method of applying protopic and exposing to sun.

  159. Hi Wissam,

I just read through your blog as I developed vitiligo back in 2004 but only within the last month has it increased dramatically all over my hands, arms, face and genital area's. I saw my dermatologist and he prescribed fluocinoide but it didn't work, I tried protopic but it didn't work for me before but I am going to try it again soon. I looked at purchasing a UVB lamp but they are crazy expensive, although I did find one that was a little cheaper for 300 usd. Does the lamp matter or just the bulb? I don't want to buy one from china or internationally then find out it isn't that great. The ones here in the US at 795 usd and that is out of my price range currently. If you have any suggestions on nb/uvb lights, let me know. I saw ones on ebay for 130 bucks but do i want one with 2 tubes or is one tube ok and how do you know which are quality? I dont know anything about them and so many sites just say that the bulb needs to be 311 nm. Any suggestions, I would love to hear. I wish there was a site comparing them or suggesting best places to get them.

    Thanks
    KD

  161. I am 41 years old and have been diagnosed with vitiligo 6 months back. After all the research, got a prescription for protopic from the doctor. Planning on using it for 3 months till I visit the doctor and reading through the blog feel confident on its usage. Will try Narrowband UVB after couple of months since I want to see the result with the use of Protopic. Any suggestion on use of Protopic for best results would be appreciated. Thanks.

  162. Hi Wissam,

I started on multivitamin + minerals 6 months ago then was on the Aegean beach for 3 month summer vacation when I noticed lots of freckling, I started Protopic (mostly on my face)in July and just tanning every day morning and late afternoon with protection, now I'm back in the USA and started the UVB NB about a week ago. My vit is quite extensive, I was about 80% depigmented, but now I'm about 70% pigmented, mostly freckles on my body but my face is almost 95% healed. So 2 months on Protopic + sun worked great on my face, my body lots of freckling mostly where I was tanning, my legs, arms. Now I'm just working with the UVB I got a 6 lamp 6 foot tall Panosol II. How long did it take you to repigment? Did you use the Protopic on your body as well? My neck is not really responding or very slight. I'm currently just doing 1min 20seconds per side (front back)
    Your advise would be appreciated.
    Sincerely
    Angela (NYC)

  171. Hi Wissam and all people, I am from Spain, I have visited 2 doctors and they recommended Protopic 0,1 + uvb 311nb combined. I have vitiligo in hands (next to all nails and small spots in the hand). They said to me that in the hands are more difficult but recommended to try.
Last summer I started with Protopic 0,1 and stopped my vitiligo and improved a little bit.
One month ago, a wellknown vitiligo doctor recommend me Khelina 3%, it's a cream made in pharmacy, that you put in vitiligo area only about 30 minutes, then you clean it and expose the area to the uvb 311nb. I start this week combined to Protopic and UVB. Although the Vitiligo in hands could be more difficult to cure I will try this and explain to you if I have better results.
    Regards!

  175. Hello Wassim,

2 years back i got vitiligo on my foreskin of testicles.

From one week i have been using

    Zincovit(morning & night)

Trimop forte(2 minutes before exposing to uv light)

Tacroz (after exposing to UV light).

Yesterday i have increased the time to expose to UV light. So it got turned into pink,is it normal or the tissues got damaged?

I am really worried about it.So please suggest me

    ReplyDelete
  176. Hi Reddy, thanks for posting, no worries, pink color is all what you need to achieve when using UVB, please review my blog, to learn more from my experience.

  177. Hi Wassim,

  179. Hi Wissam. Great blog.

I recently bought a UVB Wand from here:
    http://www.favoriteplus.com/dermahealer-uv-b-phototherapy-lamp-for-psoriasis-vitiligo-eczema.php

It comes with a Philips UVB Narrowband PL-S 9W/01 lamp and a inbuilt timer.

I have been using day in day out on my arm and hands, i have small patches so far.

But i reached the 04:40 minutes mark and still i dont reach the light erythema color (light pink).

I always wait 24h to see if the skin turns pink

Anyone here had the same issue. What was the maximum time that any of you used the light (minutes)?

I am european from Portugal. I have white skin during winter but i tan very easily in the summer.

Thanks to all and keep sharing your experiences

  180. hi Joan, it's Roberto from Spain, I have the Philips UVB 311nb, I put 1 min 20 sec. 4 days per week and I my white spots turns into pink. Maybe if you tan very easy could be the difference. Which distance do you apply from the lamp to your spots? I apply directly 2 cm distance over my skin.
    Roberto.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello. I use a 3 cm distance. I use the comb attachement to maintain that distance.

My pubic spots have the pink reaction with 40 seconds, but not my hands.

I once tried 8 minutes in my hands without results, i think that might be a very dangerous dosage so i´m back to 4.40 minutes.

I am using diprosone steroid cream 1x a day in the morning and protopic 1x day night.

I´m also using Sesderma Vitises gel 2x a day and also Vitises KT once a day and 30 minutes before my treatments every 2 days.

  181. My doctor recommended me to apply Khelina 30 minutes before the lamp, to increase the reaction made by the lamp. I see you're using Vitises KT it may be similar to Khelina cream. Do you see good results into your white spots with these products and UV lamp ?
    Roberto
